General AI Chatbots
These are some of the most popular generative artificial intelligence tools on the web. These tools are changing quickly so not all information below may be accurate. Most of these tools require that you setup an account and offer some kind of premium access for a subscription fee. Typically, the paid version offers access to a more advanced model and additional tools such as ones that give you the ability to parse data from a file.
- BingMicrosoft's search engine Bing has an AI-chatbot enabled functionality built into it. Its answers to questions include references that you can follow. Most of the sources cited are from the open web but there are sometimes academic sources included. The AI chatbot includes an image generator.
- ChatGPTChatGPT is a large language model-based chatbot developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT uses natural language processing to create humanlike conversational dialogue. It can respond to questions and compose content in various written forms. It's training data is limited in scope: it does not include recent information or much of the scholarly information universe. The $20/mo "plus" version of the service gives you access to a more advanced LLM and the ChatGPT Store, which has custom GPTs including a number with educational and academic applications.
- ClaudeClaude is a large-language model based chatbot similar to ChatGPT. It's company, Anthropic, emphasizes ethics and saftey in AI deployment.
- Forbes AdelaideThis is a beta tool that uses a generative AI chatbot to access content published by Forbes. It is an example of a narrowly-focused generative AI tool.
- Google GeminiGemini is an AI-powered chatbot by Google designed to simulate human conversations using natural language processing. Gemini uses a large language model and sometimes offers links to sources that one can follow for more information/confirmation.
- Perplexity.aiPerplexity is a search engine that uses generative IA to provide a natural language interface to queries and results. It attributes the information it delivers to its sources.
Academic AI Tools
These are experimental academic research tools that incorporate artificial intelligence to some degree. Many of them lack the breadth of content and the refinement of more established search tools including library databases like Primo, Academic Search Premier and an established academic search engine such as Google Scholar.
- ElicitAn academic search engine similar to Google Scholar with an article summarizing feature that offers a short abstract of each article listed in the results.
- ConsensusConsensus is a search engine that finds academic papers and uses AI to attempt to summarize them. It lists details about each paper including the sample size, methods used, and outcome.
- Scite.aiA search engine for scholarly articles and books that allows you to browse the works that cite a particular book or article. It provides summaries of works using exerpts and also has a browser plug in. It does not offer much functionality without a subscription plan. It is not a generative AI tool.
- Research RabbitA tool to browse academic literature as a visual graph with works connected together through citations.
