Materials that are not returned following overdue notices will be considered lost and a standard replacement charge and processing fee will be assessed, in addition to any applicable overdue fines. Patrons returning materials immediately after they have been charged may receive a credit for replacement charges, but not service charges and/or overdue fines.

Fines and other charges will be waived if the Library is found to have incorrectly assessed such charges. To appeal library charges, submit an appeal form. If you prefer, you can visit the library service desk to complete a form in person. Appeals based on the following will not be considered:

  • No knowledge of date due
  • Non-receipt of overdue, reminder, or billing notices
  • Disagreement with library fine & fee structure
  • Inability to pay fines and charges
  • Material loaned to a third party

Pay Fines

Current students, faculty, and staff may pay fines online by credit card, debit card, or bank transfer. When paying online, you will need to enter the payment amount. To check your current balance, log into your library account. Payment by cash or check is accepted at the Watzek Library Service Desk.

Eligibility

Lewis & Clark students, staff, faculty, and alumni may borrow materials from Watzek with a valid College ID or alumni card (available through Alumni Relations at the College of Arts & Sciences or the Graduate School of Education and Counseling).

Patrons who are currently enrolled or employed at Summit institutions also enjoy borrowing privileges with a valid college/university ID card.

Renewals

Materials can be renewed if they have not been requested by other patrons. See the Loan Periods chart for renewal limits. To renew materials, access your library account. There, you can check due-dates and renew eligible items. If you encounter trouble while trying to renew materials, please stop by the Library Service Desk or call (503) 768-7270.

Summit & ILL

Materials that are not available at Lewis & Clark, including checked-out and missing items, may be borrowed via Summit. This consortium of 39 academic libraries in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho provides materials to current students, staff, and faculty only. Items normally arrive at the Library Service Desk within two to three business days. You can find Summit materials, along with L&C items in Primo. Students, staff, and faculty may also borrow materials on-site at any Summit library with an L&C ID card.

Books, journal articles and other materials not available through Summit may be available via Interlibrary Loan. You can find materials available at libraries around the world and submit requests using WorldCat.

Course Reserves

Assigned texts may be available for short-term loan at the library service desk. For details, see our information for students or information for instructors.

Delivery to Graduate Campus & Boley Library

Graduate School students, staff, and faculty may request delivery to York Commons. Simply find an item using Primo, click the Request link, and select Graduate Campus as the Pickup Location. Deliveries are made daily, Monday through Friday.

Students, staff, and faculty from the Law School may have items delivered to Boley using the same process. Items are delivered daily, Monday through Friday.

Document Delivery

Current faculty, staff, students, and participants in overseas programs may request scanned copies of individual articles from the Library's periodicals and microform collection, or a chapter from a Watzek book.

Materials will usually be scanned and posted within two business days of a request. If an article is not available locally, it will be requested via Interlibrary Loan and may take additional time.

Users will receive an email notice when a pdf is posted to their Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery account. Scanned materials remain available for 30 days.

In order to comply with the Fair Use provisions of U.S. copyright law, users should not request more than one article from a single journal issue or one chapter from an individual book. Requests may be rejected if, in our judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve a violation of copyright law (Title 17, United States Code).

Proxy Check-out

Faculty and staff may designate another professor, student, or staff member as a proxy. This proxy will be allowed to check out materials at Watzek on your behalf. By authorizing a proxy, you accept all responsibility for items checked out on your library record, including applicable fines & charges. You can designate a proxy by completing this form.

Confidentiality of Library Records

Library circulation records are strictly confidential. Information from these records is not given out to a third party unless the borrower has designated a library proxy.
