  • AUTHORED by scholars.
  • Intended for an AUDIENCE of scholars and students. 
  • Known to always cite REFERENCES.
  • PUBLISHED exclusively by academic organizations/comapnies with an editorial process called peer review. 
  • Often used for data (PRIMARY) or for scholarly arguments (SECONDARY). In some disciplines (sciences) peer reviewed articles are almost always used as primary sources.  While in other disciplines (humanities) it is more common to use them as secondary sources.
