Loverti WLL 140 Fall 2025: A.I. Statement

Dr. Loverti's Policy

Academic Integrity: I expect that any work you submit in this course will be your own and that you will cite any sources you have used. Failure to do so can be plagiarism, a serious academic offense that can result in your suspension or even expulsion from the college. I expect you to understand and abide by the College’s Academic Integrity Policy and Procedures. If you have any questions about the policy, I encourage you to come and talk with me as soon as possible.

A note on using Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI): First, I strongly advise against using AI for this class. This is a research class, so you should be working with scholarly reliable sources, and AI is not a scholarly reliable source. Some AI output is factually incorrect even if it looks otherwise. In addition, because the data AI uses comes from public data, there are concerns about copyright infringement and ethical uses of that public data. AI has also proven to be biased and include bias in its results. So any time you use AI, you will have to remember that its output cannot be fully trusted and you must verify any results you get from AI by consulting scholarly reliable sources. If you do decide to use AI for your research, you are required to cite it as a source. As mentioned above, I expect that any work you submit in this course will be your own and that you will cite any sources you have used, including AI. Passing off any AI generated content as your own (including cutting and pasting content into written assignments, or paraphrasing AI content) constitutes a violation of LC's Academic Integrity Policy and will lead to disciplinary action. So anytime you use AI, you must:

- cite a generative AI tool whenever you paraphrase, quote, or incorporate into your own work any content (whether text, image, data, or other) that was created by it.

- acknowledge all functional uses of the tool (like editing your prose or translating words) in a note, your text, or another suitable location.

- take care to vet the secondary sources it cites (see example 5 on this site for more details).

Please also check the the MLA's Website on citing generative AI.
