Artist Statement

What I love about painting is it’s history. You are given a framework with which to build your own voice. While this can feel restricting - especially when gripped with the pressure to be original- I find inspiration in the visual legacy of painting. By recognizing the visual tropes and themes of painting, I take the opportunity to turn these standards on their head, to play with their meaning, and to carve out a place for my voice within them. Take for instance, the rose. A vast range of meanings are associated with a single object inherited from a cultural/visual heritage whose origins are often forgotten. Love, femininity, beauty. What, then, do we see when we look at a rapper? In our visual heavy internet culture, calling out and re-imagining visual tropes has become second nature. Appropriation of images is constant, it is innate. The subject becomes object and is commodified. We hardly have time to recognize the transformation.
By painting, I can slow down the process. Rather than instant gratification, painting is a continuous, gradual, building of substance. You must truly identify with your subject and you must contemplate its nature. Painting allows me to pay tribute to images, to imbue them with my own respect and to regard them for what they are. By slowing down the process of appropriation, I begin to comprehend the structural factors that produce an image, and the effect that they have.
