The Marin coastline in California is peppered with abandoned bunkers, forts, and batteries. I am attracted to exploring these sites, because of the weighty, rich sense of history they possess. Wandering through these ruins, I wonder what it must have been like to wait day after day for an attack from the Russians or Japanese, staring out at the ocean, a wide expanse of flat nothing. Memories fade or emerge as we grow older, just as buildings break down and fall apart as time passes.
