Research Refresher: Home

Guide to refresh your research skills before a summer job or attorney position.

Welcome

Butterflies and caterpillarsResources

As you begin your summer job, remember these two things:

  1. Begin your research with a secondary source, and
  2. The rule of 10: if you've spent 10 minutes on a research project and are going down rabbit holes or not finding anything relevant, it's time to contact the law library for help.

To help you get started with your research, we've prepared this guide with links to resources that will help you during your summer job and your first job after law school. This guide covers all the "other stuff" that doesn't get talked about enough in law school, such as legal forms, court rules, dockets, and more.

Good luck, and let us know if we can help in any way!

Summer Access to Bloomberg, Lexis & Westlaw

LEXIS
Every student with a registered Lexis ID will automatically have summer access and can use Lexis for educational and commercial purposes.

WESTLAW
You may use Westlaw during the summer, as long as it relates to one or more of the following:

  • Summer coursework
  • Research assistant assignments
  • Law review or journal research
  • Moot court research
  • Non-profit work
  • Clinical work
  • Externship sponsored by L&C

Note: Passwords may NOT be used for your work for law firms, government agencies, corporations, or other purposes unrelated to law school coursework.

BLOOMBERG LAW
You have full access to Bloomberg Law during the summer with no restrictions on use.

OTHER DATABASES
Even if you cannot use your Westlaw password this summer, don’t forget about our many other databases. You have continued access over the summer to HeinOnline, ProQuest and more.

All are welcome to use these databases on campus via your own computer, or the public computers in the law library. Plus, continuing students may access all of these databases via our off-campus links.

For more information or with any questions please contact a Boley reference librarian.
