The Lewis & Clark College Special Collections holds the corporate archives for the Portland, Oregon branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association. The Portland YMCA was founded in 1868. According to the Constitution and By-Laws of the YMCA of Portland, Oregon written in 1880,“The objects of this Association shall be the improvement of the spiritual, moral, mental, social and physical condition of this city; the promotion of the Christian religion; the cultivation of Christian sympathy; and the development of a higher standard of Christian character and activity among its own members.” The YMCA furthered these goals through athletic classes and teams, boys’ clubs, community classes, and religious and social instruction.

The YMCA archives includes executive papers, official publications, artifacts, and photographs covering the period of 1860 -2000.
