Charles Erskine Scott Wood was a soldier, poet, painter, lawyer, whose enthusiasm for the arts had a profound influence on the cultural scenes of Portland, Oregon (1880s-1915) and San Francisco/Los Gatos (1915-1944). After translating Chief Joseph's surrender speech, Wood became a friend of Joseph, and Wood's son Erskine lived with Joseph for two separate autumn seasons. This collection of materials collected by Erskine includes almost 2,000 family letters, diaries, photographs, and original works of art by C.E.S. Wood.
