Lewis & Clark College has a wide range of books, manuscripts, and broadsides, by the late poet William Stafford, 1914-1993. Stafford was a nationally acclaimed poet, who taught at Lewis & Clark College for over thirty years.

The cornerstone of the collection Lewis and Clark's holdings is William Stafford's personal papers, given to the College by the Stafford family in April 2008. This collection includes over 20,000 pages of daily writings, poetry typescripts, photographs of poets and colleagues taken by Stafford, audio and video recordings of Stafford reading, over 60,000 pages of correspondence, and Stafford's own book and broadside collection.

The Special Collection holdings also include:

· The Carter Burden collection of William Stafford publications, acquired in 1999 by Lewis & Clark College with the assistance of an anonymous donor. This collection includes the majority of Stafford publications up to 1988, usually signed first printings. The collection also includes a representative selection of Stafford's eighty or so broadsides, and some of Stafford's teaching materials from Lewis & Clark College.

· Correspondence between Stafford and the Lewis & Clark College administration.

· The raw film footage for three Stafford documentaries, What the River Says; The Life of the Poem; and The Methow River Poems.
