VERN RUTSALA (Feb. 5th, 1934 - )

BIOGRAPHY

A distinguished poet, Vern Rutsala was born February 5, 1934, in McCall, Idaho. Aside from time spent in Europe and the Midwest, Rutsala has lived in Oregon most of his life. He is the author of numerous poetry books. Among his awards are a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a Masters Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission, the Carolyn Kizer Poetry Prize, and the Northwest Poets Prize. Rutsala taught at Lewis & Clark College from 1961-2004.

Rutsala was a regular contributor to periodicals, including Atlantic Monthly, Times Literary Supplement, Paris Review, Nation, Midland, Poetry, New Yorker, Harper's, American Poetry Review, Chicago Review, Mississippi Review, Nebraska Review, Seneca Review, and New Letters.

Education: Reed College, B.A., 1956; State University of Iowa, M.F.A., 1960. Military/Wartime Service: U.S. Army, 1956-58.

Career: Lewis and Clark College, Portland, OR, 1961-2004, professor of English. Visiting professor, University of Minnesota, 1968-69, and Bowling Green State University, 1970; writer in residence, Redlands University, 1979, and University of Idaho, 1988.

Awards: National Endowment for the Arts fellow, 1974, 1979; Northwest Poets Prize, 1975; Guggenheim fellow, 1982; Carolyn Kizer Poetry Prize, 1988; Master fellowship, Oregon Arts Commission, 1990; Hazel Hall Prize, Oregon Book Award, 1992, for Selected Poems; Juniper Prize, University of Massachusetts Press, 1994, for Little-Known Sports; Duncan Lawrie Prize, Arvon Foundation, 1994.
