Aubrey Watzek Library offers a glimpse into Oregon’s communal past in this exhibit. Join us for the opening reception on Sunday, September 20 at 3 pm in the Library Atrium. The reception will follow a presentation on Communal Messages: The Literature of Community, the final session in the Communal Humanities series sponsored by the Aurora Colony Historical Society. The session runs from 1:00-3:00 in the Watzek Library Classroom on Sunday, September 20 and features Watzek Library Director Jim Kopp, William Stafford Archivist Paul Merchant, and Oregon author Jane Kirkpatrick. The exhibit is inspired by the publication of Eden Within Eden: Oregon’s Utopian Heritage (Oregon State University Press, 2009) by Library Director Jim Kopp and the annual conference of the Communal Studies Association being held in Aurora on October 1-3, 2009. The exhibit has been a collaborative effort of several institutions and individuals. Materials for the exhibit come from the Aurora Colony Historical Society, Special Collections of the University of Oregon, Watzek Library, and Jim Kopp’s personal collection. Special thanks to Patrick Harris, Curator at the Aurora Colony Historical Society, and Linda Long, Manuscripts Librarian at the University of Oregon for their assistance and for loaning materials for the exhibit. On display in the Watzek Library Atrium through December 31, 2009. |

This exhibit explores the early intellectual culture of the College. “A Selection of Interesting Books from Lewis & Clark’s First Library” highlights a number of titles rediscovered during the past year when Lewis & Clark librarians began a thorough review of the College’s library holdings. The exhibited books are from the College’s first library in Albany, Oregon (1867-1942). On display in the Watzek Library Atrium through May 31, 2010. |
