RefWorks Tutorial

Off-Campus Access to RefWorks

  • Generally, if you access RefWorks through links on the library's web site, RefWorks should work just like it does on campus
  • Sometimes, when accessing RefWorks off campus, you may be asked for our library's group code

Importing from the Summit Catalog

  • From your list of search results in Summit, place a check mark in the box next to the records you want in your RefWorks database.
  • Click the "Save Marked Records" button.
  • Click the "Export List" button.
  • Choose to send list to "Local Disk," then click the "Submit" button.
  • A box will appear asking if you want to open or save the file. Choose "Save" and save the export.txt file to your desktop.
  • Login to RefWorks (you can find this from the Your Library Accounts link on the library homepage), if you haven't already.
  • Under the References drop-down menu, choose "Import."
  • From the Import Filter/Data Source drop-down menu, choose "Innovative Interfaces INNOPAC."
  • From the Database drop-down menu, choose "Lewis & Clark College."
  • Click the "Browse" button, then find and select your file from your desktop and click "Open."
  • Click the "Import" button.

Importing from the Lewis & Clark Library Catalog

  • In the L&C Library Catalog, click on the "Other Links/RefWorks" link on the page that displays the full record for a book.
  • On the next page you will see a "Save to RefWorks" button. If you haven't already logged in to RefWorks, you will be prompted to do so. Once you have logged in, your citation information will be automatically imported.

Importing using "Get Item" from research databases

  • Oftentimes, after running a search, you will see the "Get Item" button . Simply click on the button and a page will appear with a "Save to RefWorks" button. Click on this button and your citation will automatically be imported into RefWorks.

Other ways of importing from research databases

Generally speaking, "Save" or "Mark" your records in the database and then:

  1. Directly send your records to RefWorks if this is supported by the research database that you're using
  2. OR save them to your local computer and then import them into RefWorks using a RefWorks filter specific to that research database (in RefWorks, go to References->Import, then choose the database vendor in Import/Filter (ABC-Clio, OCLC Firstsearch, etc.), the research database name for database, then browse for your file)

To import from an Ebsco database, such as Academic Search Premier:

  1. Login to RefWorks and then open another browser window.
  2. When you find citations in a Ebsco database, you can use the "Add" folder feature to the right of the citation. After adding your citations, click on the "Folder has Items" icon at the top of your search results. A folder will open up showing all the items you have added.
  3. Select the citations you would like to export, then click "Export" link.
  4. Choose the "Direct Export to RefWorks" button, and then click on the "Save" button.

Manual Input

  • If no "Save" or "Export" feature appears, it will be necessary to manually fill in or copy and paste the required citation information into a RefWorks form.
  • Login to Refworks and under the "References" drop-down menu select "Add New Reference" and Import.
