Varansi is a crowded city, filled with celebration this time of year. Power outages are common here, because of all the lights strung up for the Ramila festival. But at night the squares are filled with bright colors.

This structure is a part of the palace city Fatehpur Sikri, which was built in 1570 by the Mugal emperor, Akbar. Akbar decided that he wanted to move his capital in India from Agra to Sikri and thus began building Fatehpur. In this picture you see the Panch Mahal, where Akbar would sit on the very top tier and look out over his city, in the evenings for the cool breeze, and at night for the beautiful view of the moonlight. In each of the 5 tiers of this building a different party sat. (more...)

(Re)searching Swastik Towers and Neighborhood change to larger apartments; The inside
October 7, 2012

This image depicts the inside of Swastic Towers, specifically on the 5th floor. The outside of Swastik towers is spotless, with vibrant plants and trash free lawns. But the inside of the building was another story-the 5th floor was dingy, and dusty. The potted plants which were so well maintained outside were dead here, obviously put up by the hotel but never maintaine. There was a soft glow from the day, but it did nothing more then reflect the shadows of dirt and dust. (more...)

Re)searching Swastik Towers and Neighborhood change to larger apartments; Grochery store
October 7, 2012

The first shop keeper I met with was Satish Gupta who owns one of the little grocery stores in the Swastik complex. When I asked him what kind-of relationship he had with them, he replied that when they call him, he either brings up food for them (whatever their purchasing for their groceries) or acts as an operator and connects them to another number. Re)searching Swastik Towers and Neighborhood change to larger apartments; The Pan shop
October 7, 2012

I then went to the local pan shop (which is only a few doors down from the apartments) to speak with Jagdish, who has owned the shop for 30 years. Which means that it is probably one of the oldest shops in this neighborhood and that he has seen the changes of the neighborhood. Jagdish, who seems much older then the first shop keeper I talked to, and has no teeth, is very popular with the local people. In the few minuets we spend talking to him, he serves 20 customers. Re)searching Swastik Towers and Neighborhood change to larger apartments; Great height and out of place
October 7, 2012

Swastik towers stretches far above the normal height of the neighborhood stores and houses—indeed, towering over everything. The structure sits a fair amount of yards or meters back from the road (due to laws enforced by the city which aims to keep good sunlight and airflow on the streets despite the sky scrapers).

Re)searching Swastik Towers and Neighborhood change to larger apartments; the fence and the paradise within the city
October 7, 2012

The large gate, huge fences and guard indicate that the people within Swastik Towers feel unsafe in the neighborhood, that they feel the need to keep out the neighborhood inhabitants. This is apparent because if one was open to people just dropping by as is customary to Varanasi culture, they would not have a guard who denies access to those not pre approved.

Re)searching Swastik Towers and Neighborhood change to larger apartments; Traditional homes
October 7, 2012

Pictured here is a neighborhood nearby Swastik towers, a very contrasting image to the high-rise flats. Here is where one of the Nirman Didi's lives. During our conversation she said that the people who live in the apartments are “outsiders” as were the builders. This indicates that these people spend little to no time in the community. (more...)

Mysore marketplace
October 7, 2012

This photo depicts the market place of Mysore. The market place, which is bustling with older Indian women, is full of stands of colored powder. The powder is used to decorate the ground in front of Indian homes. The women weave intricate designs, each woman using different designs (usually passed down from her mother). These designs are done once a week, and are used to welcome visitors into their homes.

The grain fields of Navdanya farm stretched far and wide, they are their main source of seed and come in many varieties- a lesson they teach all their farmers. Because the more varieties of crop you have, the more food security you have. If one crop fails, then you have others to fall back on.
