October 7, 2012

This is one view of the Fatehpuh Sikri Palace built by the great Mughal emperor Akbar. For 14 years it served at the capital for the Mughal empire. Made out of red standstone, the architectural style is typical of this Mughal period. Today it is a populat tourist destination, though not as popular as the operational mosque next door.

Navdanya
October 7, 2012

This chicken farm is owned by a local farmer in Dera Dhun. All of these chickens are raised within 3 months and sold for meat consumption. This farm is not part of the Navdanya consortium of organic farms. It takes about 3 years for a farm to transition to completely organic. Even then, it isn't necessarily certified organic.

Brahmanal
October 7, 2012

This scene takes place on the Manikarnika ghat in Brahmanal neighborhood. It is Varanasi's main cremation ghat. This is a very common ritual in Varanasi. Men carry bodies draped in gold and orange fabric on their shoulder's down the long narrow lanes chanting. Once at the ghat, bodies are burned and their ashes sent swirling into the Ganga. It is an incredible sight to see and shows how death is a natural part of Varanasi's culture.

(Re)searching Ganga worship and pollution in Banaras: Evening Arti
October 7, 2012

While this is a fairly new addition to Ganga worship in Varanasi, it is still quite powerful to watch. Hundreds of people from Varanasi and all over the world come to Dashashwamedh ghat to take part of this ritual.

(Re)searching Ganga worship and pollution in Banaras: Assi Ghat
October 7, 2012

Behind the ghats you find a maze of windy alleyways with an industry that supports Ganga Worship. This picture shows stalls behind Assi Ghat that sell plastic bottles for people to collect the holy Ganga water to bring home. These industries show how rituals devoted to nature worship are a large part of Varanasi culture.

(Re)searching Ganga worship and pollution in Banaras: Women performing Ganga rituals
October 7, 2012

Here I came across a women going through the ritual that she does every day to show her respect for the Ganga. First she touches forhead to the water and lifts a fistful of water to sun. She then gives offerings of sandelwood, lanterns, and flowers. She then fills a bottle of water from the river to bring home.

(Re)searching Ganga worship and pollution in Banaras: Trash along the banks of the Ganga
October 7, 2012

Trash lines the steps of Assi ghat. This scene is inconsistent with the rituals that are being performed only yards away. From an outsider's perspective, it seems strange that those who call the river their mother can throw trash into her at the same time.
