Arch near the Qutub Minar
October 7, 2012

This is an arch within the Qutub Minar complex in Delhi. Qutub-ud-din Aibak, the first sultan of Delhi, initiated the construction of the Qutub Minar in the 13th century. Since many rulers after him continued construction of the Qutub Minar and surrounding areas, scholars cannot date which ruler is responsible for the construction of this arch. In this picture you can see many intricate carvings, including lines from the Quran. (more...)

Researching Ayurveda in Modern-day Banaras: Banaras Hindu University
October 7, 2012

This is an assistant professor of a section of Ayurveda (Kriya Shareer or Physiology) at Banaras Hindu University. The professor was able to give me the background into my project. He had a strong faith in Ayurveda and its ability to improve the health of a person with low impact methods. The professor was helpful with giving me information about the concept of the body in, how Ayurveda is taught, and its interaction with western medicine. (more...)

Researching Ayurveda in Modern-day Banaras: Ayurvedic Garden, Banaras Hindu University
October 7, 2012

I visited the Ayurvedic Garden hoping to learn a little about Ayurvedic plants and meet a potential informant. The garden is very new; it was started in 2010. Faculty have spent the past four years collecting seeds, and there are now over 200 medicinal plant species inside the garden. The whole garden is over 100 acres. It is used for educational purposes as well as possibly used to make medicines for the Ayurvedic clinic on campus. (more...)

This is the owner of Sparsa Center located in Assi. As the main practioner of what seemed to be a profitable Ayurveda center, the doctor was helpful in talking about Ayurveda in general, his personal history with Ayurveda, his perceptions of Ayurveda in Banaras, and about his clinic in particular. Talking with me for about an hour, he was willing to give lengthly responses, answering many of the questions that lingered during my research. (more...)

Researching Ayurveda in Modern-day Banaras: Aloe Vera in Assi
October 7, 2012

For part of my research, I went to Assi Ghat to interview residents of Banaras about their interaction and opinion of Ayurveda. There I managed to interview a student at Banaras Hindu University and an english teacher living in Assi. Researching Ayurveda in Modern-day Banaras: Swasthya Vardhak Ayurvedic Centre
October 7, 2012

I found this clinic while walking around Ravindrapuri. Inside, I was able to talk to the manager of this branch of Swasthya Vardhak. He is involved in the marketing and manufacturing of Ayurvedic medicine. He managed to give me insight into the Western perception of Ayurveda. Sounding almost like a commercial for Ayurveda medicine, he was slightly aggressive in trying to convince me that Western medicine is bad and Ayurveda obviously works because of its long history in India. Christian Medical College, Vellore
October 7, 2012

This picture shows the hundreds of plastic bags along the wall, and covering the pathway. CMC loosely practices the waste management model proposed by Mr. Srinivasan. His model entails sorting all pieces of waste into different categories. Although this trash has clearly been sorted, because it is mostly plastic bags, this picture shows a large problem. Rather than being neatly sorted away, the plastic bags cover a large area. (more...)
