Metalworker
October 7, 2012

This man was doing metal work in his shop at the Chauk in Varanasi. He and his fellow shop keeper worked on separate pieces- one was Hindi and one was Islamic. These metal plates would be used to decorate homes and were ordered and then picked up at a later date from the shop. The narrow streets of the chauk are hosts to many different kinds of businesses including sweets, silks, and metalworkers.

Navdanya
October 7, 2012

This photo was taken at Navdanya Farm, a seed farm owned by Vandana Shiva. Here, a woman is working in a ginger root field that is also home to other crops. Biodiversity is one of the ways that Navdanya ensures that disease and pests don't damage the crops. Behind the farm is a forest full of leaves that can be used for feeding cows. While it is illegal to take the leaves from these odd looking trees a few days before this photo was taken men were spotted gathering them.

Lodi Gardens
October 7, 2012

This is a picture of Sheesh Gumbad in Lodi Gardens. It was built during the 15th century under the Lodi Sultans in Delhi. It is surrounded by a variety of other tombs in Lodi Gardens also built by these Sultans to house the bodies of their deceased. Currently, Lodi Gardens and Sheesh Gumbad are used as recreational areas. The Gardens are well maintained areas where people can walk, picnic, and explore. (more...)

(Re)searching Romantic Relationships and Public Space in Banaras: Banaras Hindu University
October 7, 2012

This is a photograph of one of the gates into BHU. BHU provided an interesting context for my research because it is one of the few places in Banaras where romantic relationships between young people are somewhat publicly accepted. As a place centered around modernity (with an added emphasis on traditional education) and youth, this place acts as an intersection between traditional and modern values that lacks familial influence.

(Re)searching Romantic Relationships and Public Space in Banaras: A Young Couple at BHU
October 7, 2012

This photograph contrasts with the photo I took of another couple at Ravidas Park. The couple is out in the open on the BHU campus, something that isn't seen in most of Banaras. Couples like these are littered around the campus. I wish that I had the time to research how the public views BHU for these reasons and how the BHU community interacts with the greater Banaras community.

(Re)searching Romantic Relationships and Public Space in Banaras: A Young Couple at Ravidas Park
October 7, 2012

This photo was taken of a young couple who are hiding in the bushes at Ravidas Park. Relationships like these are looked down upon by older generations because young people are not expected to have romantic relationships until marriage. Thus young couples are forced to find private and secretive ways of pursuing these relationships.

(Re)searching Romantic Relationships and Public Space in Banaras: Love Hiding in the Bushes
October 7, 2012

This picture shows my first impression of Ravidas Park and it's uses for young people in Banaras. If you look closely, you can see the backs of couples sitting in the bushes, hidden from public view. Couples like these were scattered all over the park which is what spurned my interest in public space and young romance. These young people are usually of a higher class and around the ages of 15 to 23. (more...)

(Re)searching Romantic Relationships and Public Space in Banaras: Ladies at Ravidas Park
October 7, 2012

I took this photograph at my first visit to Ravidas Park close to Assi Ghat. A group of Indian women were hanging out at the park, gossiping and playing on the seesaws. This photo exemplifies how it is socially acceptable for same sex groups to spend time together in public, but couples are forced to hide. It's also just a great picture of some Indian women having fun.

Indian Green Service: Vellore
October 7, 2012

This is a photograph of the Christian Medical College in Vellore. It is one of the sites that the Indian Green Service was involved with during it's project on waste management. IGS stopped working with CMC a few years ago and the difference between this project and some of the other projects that were going on currently was astounding. (more...)
