Textile Walla
October 7, 2012

The Dilli Haat is a bazaar in New Delhi where merchants set up shop for two weeks at a time, in a rotation throughout the year. Many come from rural areas, like Kashmir, because of the economic opportunities provided by Delhi's high amount of global tourist traffic. A shopper finds a range of quality cloths, jewelry and other assorted goods at a reasonable price, upon paying the 20 rupee entry fee. (more...)

Aum Cafe
October 7, 2012

This cafe, located near Assi Ghat in Varanasi, was a prime location to conduct my research about the varieties of foreigners in India. The ambiance caters to those people from Europe, Israel and America who are seeking an idealistic version of "spiritual India," and want to escape the grittier reality on the streets. Its Californian owner, Shivani, has a rather low opinion of the locals and their dirtier habits, but loves Hindu theology and cosmology. (more...)

Darren at Nirman
October 7, 2012

Here is our friend Darren, from Kalamazoo University in Wisconsin, who along with four other students, shared the space at the Nirman school with us LC students during our stay in Varanasi. I interviewed him for my research because he seemed to be very well-adjusted to the new culture, with a proficiency at Hindi and an interest in embracing all the strange and scary new elements of a foreign culture. BR Hills Tribals
October 7, 2012

At our jungle resort in a region called the BR Hills (4-5 hour bus ride away from Mysore), we observed/participated in a traditional tribal dance. We and the other guests at the resort, Indians from various cities, watched as the local boys of about ages 10-15 changed out of their t-shirts and jeans and into their loincloths and wreaths and started dancing. Forest Walk
October 10, 2011

This photo is of the forest that lays just beyond the border of the Navdanya seed farm, outside Dehradun, and is home to many different sorts of creatures. Although this experience revealed very little about India's politics or religions, the wilderness nevertheless tells us an interesting story about an India lost in history and rarely seen by tourists.
