The Hymn

On, panther! Every street corner,
every house in our ward,
awakens the beautiful district of
singing, happy and a sweet song.

Red, burning flame colored
and blue sky: the most expensive,
the most beloved, our flag,
makes us children of the same mother.

Today is the feast: Victory smiles
and the sun gilds with the rays
of the district by Stalloreggi
kisses in the wind, our flag.

Go up to the sky this hymn of glory!
Panther, so indomitable and proud
boldly well win every race
today celebrates your people for you!

Take, jumps, Pantera! Every peak
is reached, our hope
will turn to you, in joy!
... Win a Palio invoked expects!

Letizia every face smiling.
's Two Doors s'adornino to party!
Panther never sleeps has arisen:
the "Madonna del Corvo" the guide!

Today is the feast: Victory smiles
and the sun gilds with the rays
of the district by Stalloreggi
kisses in the wind, our flag.

Go up to the sky this hymn of glory!
Panther, so indomitable and proud
boldly well win every race
today celebrates your people for you!

The Territory

La Contrada della Pantera has its headquarters in Via San Quirico, which takes it name from the church parish of Saints Quirico and Giuditta—perhaps the oldest church in Siena, built on a pagan temple dedicated to the god Quirinus.

The Origins

La Contrada della Pantera began in the area of Siena located west of the city containing the populated portion of a district represented by the military companies of Stalloreggi di Dentro and Stalloreggi di Fuori. The name was taken after the construction of a machine depicting a panther, the insignia of the city of Lucca, in homage to the wealthy silk merchant residents of Lucca who marched in the procession of various public events organized by the Sienese during the Italian Renaissance.

Cultural Relevance

Like I stated before, this contrada (as with the rest of the contradas) is a very important community as well as a long-standing form of cultural heritage and tradition to the Sienese people. It is one of the contradas which competes every summer in the Palio di Siena. For every one who competes in the Palio or is a member of a contrada, preparing with their contrada for the Palio is a very significant part of life. The Palio and the contrada originated from many many years ago, but still hold almost the same level of significance and impact on the daily lives of those within the contradas and even somewhat for Sienese outside of them.
