Borrowing
This page provides information on borrowers' privileges and responsibilities. Borrowers agree to abide by library policies when they use the collections.
Eligibility
Lewis & Clark students, staff, faculty, and alumni may borrow materials from Watzek with a valid College ID or alumni card (available through Alumni Relations).
Patrons who are currently enrolled or employed at institutions that have established reciprocal lending agreements with Lewis & Clark also enjoy borrowing privileges with a valid college/university ID card.
Those not otherwise elligible to borrow materials may be able to purchase a Neighbor Pass or purchase limited privileges for $100/year. Please contact the Watzek Circulation Desk for more information.

Renewals
Materials can be renewed if they have not been requested by other patrons—see chart above for renewal limits. To renew materials, access your library account and view checked-out items. There, you can check due-dates and renew elligible items. Our web tutorial will take you through the process step-by-step. If you encounter trouble while trying to renew materials, please stop by the Circulation Desk or call (503) 768-7270.
Fines & Charges
Overdue fines are assessed to encourage prompt return of library materials. Fines apply all days and all hours the library is open and accrue until late items are returned or renewed.
| Patron Type | Material Type | Fine |
|---|---|---|
| L&C Student | Books | $0.20/day |
| AV Materials | $2.00/day | |
| Course Reserves | $0.50/hour | |
| Summit | $0.50/day for first ten days, $1.00/day thereafter | |
| Interlibrary Loan | $0.50/day for first ten days, $1.00/day thereafter | |
| L&C Faculty and Staff | Summit | $0.50/day for first ten days, $1.00/day thereafter |
| Interlibrary Loan | $0.50/day for first ten days, $1.00/day thereafter | |
| Alumni and Friend of the Library | Books | $0.20/day |

| AV Materials | $0.50/day for first ten days, $1.00/day thereafter |
Materials that are not returned following overdue notices will be considered lost and a standard replacement charge and processing fee will be assessed. Patrons returning materials immediately after they have been charged will receive a credit for replacement charges, but not service charges and/or overdue fines.
Fines and other charges will only be waived if the Library is found to have incorrectly assessed such charges. To appeal library charges, visit the Circulation Desk within 30 days of the charges to complete an appeal form. Appeals based on the following will not be considered:
- No knowledge of date due
- Non-receipt of overdue, reminder, or billing notices
- Theft
- Illness
- Disagreement with library fine & fee structure
- Inability to pay fines and charges
- Material loaned to a third party
- Vacations
Summit & ILL
Materials that are not available at Lewis & Clark, including checked-out and missing items, may be borrowed via Summit. This consortium of over 30 academic libraries in Oregon and Washington provides materials to students, staff, and faculty only. Items normally arrive at the Circulation Desk within two or three business days. Students, staff, and faculty may also borrow materials on-site at any Summit library.
Books, journal articles and other materials not available through Summit may be available via Interlibrary Loan.
Holds & Recalls
If a book you need is checked out, you should first try to request the item via Summit—you will usually receive the item more quickly than by placing a hold on the Watzek copy. If you are unable to request a copy through Summit, you can place a hold on the checked-out item by clicking the Request button in the item's catalog display. When a held item arrives at Watzek, you will receive a notice via email.
South Campus & Boley Library
Graduate School students, staff, and faculty may request items from Watzek and have them delivered to Rogers Hall. Simply find an item using the library catalog, click the Request button, and follow the instructions. Deliveries are made daily, Monday through Friday. Summit items may also be requested in a similar manner from the Summit catalog. Interlibrary loan items may be requested by forwarding the email notification of their arrival to circ@lclark.edu, and including your pickup destination (Rogers 3rd or 4th floor workroom for faculty and staff, Rogers 202 for students).
Students, staff, and faculty from the Law School may have items delivered to Boley using the same process. Boley staff retrieve items daily, Monday through Friday.
For an article from the library's periodicals collection, Graduate School faculty, staff and students may make a request through Interlibrary Loan, where the article will be scanned and delivered electronically.
Overseas Support
Watzek can provide many resources to students studying abroad. Research guides, databases and ebooks are always available using an L&C username and password. Articles and individual chapters from print materials at Watzek and other libraries can also be delivered electronically. To make a request for something from a print collection, please use the appropriate interlibrary loan form and be sure to specify your program in the Notes field. For help with requests, send an email to ill@lclark.edu.
Librarians are also here to offer remonte research assistance via IM or email.
Notices
Overdue, hold, and reminder notices are sent as a courtesy to Lewis & Clark email addresses. Failure to receive these notices does not remove the borrower's obligation to return material by the due date or the recall due date, nor does it constitute grounds for reducing a borrower's fine. Patrons should check their library accounts regularly to track due dates and renew items.
Please direct questions about borrowing policies and procedures to the Circulation Department at circ@lclark.edu or (503) 768-7273
