In creating this map we hope to highlight a correlation between low income areas and environmental health risks. We hypothesized that low income areas would have higher rates of TRI’s in their communities. In striving for environmental justice we must first locate demographics which are being treated unfairly due to their socio-economic class. Looking at the data in this particular format allows up a clear spatial depiction of areas with high risk and their association to the population demographic. The data was obtained from the 2000 tract-level US Census and the EPA toxic release inventory. By using computerized mapping software it is easy to control the information displayed in order to isolate the factors necessary for analysis. Also, Google Earth allows widespread access to the information regarding an important environmental justice issue. Our map does not confirm nor reject our hypothesis as the TRI’s are distributed throughout a range of different income areas. However, we can see that their location is influenced by geographic features. All the TRI’s are clustered in close proximity to a river.
